Review: ASOS Swim Brief with High Leg
I picked up this ASOS string bikini swim brief last year. My plan actually wasn’t to review it with it being end of summer when I got it. I was just in a buying mood The plan changed when I recently saw they still offer the bikini in at least some colors still. I’m a sucker for the string bikini, which is why I chose this swimsuit.
The bikini is brand ASOS. It’s a full back cut and pretty full frontal coverage too. It has a center seamed contour pouch. The sides measure about 7/8″. It’s made of a blend of 80% polyamide and 20% Elastane. The pouch lining is 91% polyester and 9% Elastane. The tag says to delicate wash only and dry away from direct sunlight. Also states to rinse in clean water immediately after use. The bikini is made in Turkey.
So this was my first time trying ASOS I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I liked the price point and they looked decent on the model. My problem was about determining size. Their small says fits a 32″ waist and their medium says fits a 34″ waist. I fall more in a 33″ though can fit a 32″. I ended up going with the medium to be safe. The medium seems to fit fine, but maybe the small would fit better. I would say my main issue with the swim bikini is the elastic in what I’ll call the leg openings. It doesn’t seem to be taut enough. The back at the top is a bit loose and the back doesn’t hold snug on the butt like most swim bikinis I’ve tried do. That doesn’t exactly make this pair a dud.
The pouch of the string bikini holds me nicely. It’s not too snug and not loose as all. Keeps me in place like I want. I think the pouch could be a little narrower. I think that would help aesthetically with the look personally for me. I think the back even without the tautness in the elastic is fairly decent looking. I mainly wonder how the back will perform in water. This isn’t really a cut I’d wear where we go to the beach, so it won’t be tested out in the water any time soon.
For the price I paid for this bikini, I’m happy enough with it. It’s a modest string bikini cut. It’s very comfortable to wear, which is ideal. Not really one I’ll wear going to semi busy to busy family beaches though it may be modest enough to. I’m seeing it more as a backyard sunning pair for me. With it being on the cheap side it can get abused by the sun and sweat. Not a pair I highly recommend. If it interests you then for the price it could be worth a try. It won’t be getting any thongs up recommendation from me. I did see it has mixed reviews on the ASOS website.

Pros: Price isn’t too bad, comfortable string bikini
Cons: Elastic not taut around the leg openings; I’d like it a tad narrower in the pouch

Would be nicer with drawstrings
I think the drawstring ruins the look of the swim brief. Personally, I don’t like swim briefs to have a drawstring on the outside of the brief. I don’t see any purpose in it. It’s like buying a corvette that has a white rope attached to the hood of the car… a rope that you cannot remove. It takes away from the overall look and attraction of the brief and the person wearing it. If I am rocking a swim bikini for the ladies, I don’t want a big, white drawstring blocking my best assets!
I swim in them so I have use for them especially during flip turns doesn’t have to be a tacky white string
ASOS stuff is strange. They get part way “there” with the basic design, then blow it on the details. Your review confirms what I’ve suspected. They make a similar design thong, but it has a back strap design that is, well huge. Not big enough to be a 1/2 back Brazillian style, but WAY to big for any thong. I don’t know what their designers are thinking. If they’re thinking.
I buy a similar design on Amazon, called “YuKaiChen Men’s Briefs Low Rise Bikini Underwear”. If you search for it, you’ll see what I mean. But their material is fantastic, construction is spot-on, and design is all it should be. They’d solve all the negatives in the review of the ASOS. I’ve purchased more of these than any other. Size up if you don’t want snug, otherwise, get what size you normally would. I’m about 34 and get a large.
Correcting my stupid error! The briefs I mentioned on Amazon are not specifically swimwear, though frankly, the lines are pretty blurry, and I think they’d work fine. For swimwear in the tanga/string style, I really like what Kiniki does. Great price, great quality, great style and fit. Get your actual size. Their only failing is very limited colors. Otherwise, I like them a lot and have 3 now.
Yes, some pairs can double as both and some people do like to wear swimwear as underwear. I typically aim to have a pouch lining in my swimwear, but that is just me. Kiniki does have quality stuff for a great price, but they have moved away from a lot of the styles I really liked in both swimwear and underwear. That has been disappointing for me and like you said colors are limited in the ones they still have I do like.
ASOS has a lot of of stuff that I want, but sadly, they do not make big & tall sizes.
