Summer 2021: Swim Brief Style – Part 2

Summer 2021 swim brief part 2

Welcome back to part two of my 2021 swim brief wearing summer. Miss part one read it here. After our trip it was backyard blow up family pool time while we waited for the lake water to try to warm up. Then the rain started coming and coming and coming. Weather wouldn’t cooperate with days that we didn’t already have things we had to do. Then it was almost time for dog sitting the wife’s sister’s family dog for over a week and we were looking at no beach until probably August! By some lucky chance the weather looked decent and we just had a morning thing to do on dog day (He was coming in the evening).

We didn’t get to the beaches until about 2 in the afternoon. It said the beach we normally go to was closed when we got to the sign saying what was opened (lifeguarded for swimming). We decided to drive that way anyway. Since there were quite a few cars in the lot we stopped and checked out the beach and it was guarded. So we gathered our stuff from the car and trekked to a spot between a mother with two kids and an older lady. As in the past we got our blanket set up and anchored down. Then the removal of my sandals, shirt, and finally shorts to reveal my Speedo Solar swim brief in black. Kids wanted to get in the water first, which is where we headed. Still was pretty cold feeling to get in, but seemed nice after a while in it. I’m pretty sure I heard two kids in the water say something about a Speedo, but didn’t quite hear what they said. Didn’t know kids would know a Speedo around here! I spent most of our time there in the water about waist deep monitoring the kids. Only out a couple of times. Of course dork shorts on the rest of the guys. Saw one girl in a cheeky Brazilian type bikini. Really there weren’t many bikini wearing women. Seemed to be more tankinis either with brief, skirt, or short bottoms. After a little over two hours we gathered our stuff up and headed to the car. I decided to not cover up and wore my swim brief back to the car. Actually I ended up driving home in just it, since the flies were biting bad. Now on our drive out past other beach areas I spotted a guy in a burgundy swim brief (maybe 2″ sides) at his car. Looked like he may have had family with him too. He was at a beach area that I have gone to without the family before. It is unguarded, no facilities, with just parking along the road. So a less busy than the main beaches. It was a nice spotting. Would have been better if at same area as me.

Round two of the beach occurred early August. Again things didn’t work out well and we didn’t arrive until after 2. Pretty packed parking lot at our go to beach, but we found a space to park. Things were a bit crowded this trip with only two lifeguards on duty and it being a Friday. With just two lifeguards that created less swimming area, so everyone was setting up in the limited swimming area. We found a spot next to a lifeguard chair in front of people that were setting up a popup canopy. This go I stripped down to my Speedo Shoreline swim brief (pretty much a Speedo Solar). Again kids wanted to go directly to the water. Kind of felt like people (seemed to be more guys) looking at me this day. Don’t know if they were trying to get a double take, which was hard to do because I was in the water or just my imagination. People started clearing out when some rain passed through for maybe 5 to 10 minutes at most, so that was nice. You can guess what the guys were wearing. Nothing really skimpy on the women that I noticed either. Really only one woman stuck out a bit from the trip. One because of the suit and two she was probably a little older than me. Typically women around my age and older opt for more conservative suits in general at this beach at least. This one was wearing a high waisted bikini. Now it had a higher leg cut and then something like a 3/4 back for a bit of cheek showing. It was nice even though it was a high waisted (I’m not much of a fan of them), it at least wasn’t really a conservative suit. Think it was close to three hours when we packed up to head home. I followed in line with the first trip and wore my swim brief back to the car and home.

Less than a week later on a Wednesday we decided to fit another trip in. We weren’t sure if we’d get another chance or not before school started up. Fitting in line with previous visit, it was a late arrival at about 3 o’clock. It looked like another packed parking lot, but part of the lot was covered in water. When we got to the beach again there were only two lifeguards on duty. Less busy than the time before probably part do to the parking, but also an overcast day. We set up near a lifeguard chair and I stripped down to my HOM Alize swim brief. Then into the water we went. The lake was actually pretty rough with ocean-like calm waves. Kids (daughter especially) seem to really enjoy it so I spent the 2 hours in the water. Beach goers were pretty similar as other visits. Saw one woman in a Rio/Brazilian bikini bottom at one point. Another woman caught my eye on this trip as soon as I got out of the car. As I mentioned above I don’t see many women my age or older wearing bikinis very often at this beach. This one was older than me by several or more years wearing an eye-catching deep pink bikini. Her bottom cut was similar to the coverage of my swim bikini brief. It’s refreshing when there are older women not following the trend of moving to conservative suits as they age. When we gathered up our stuff to leave I opted as before to just go with my swim brief back to the car. On the walk back, we stopped a couple times. My daughter was having trouble walking in her flip flops. I noticed a teenage boy turned in his chair looking our way both times. So here’s hoping for a piqued interest in swim briefs for him.

We found time to fit in one last beach hurrah before the start of school. When we got to the park it only listed two beaches open for swimming (guarded ones). College was back in session, so probably short on staff to open other beaches. The one beach that was opened I believe is where the teenagers and college aged most likely hang out with it having beach volleyball courts. So we opted for trying out the other one, since kids wanted to play in the water.

When we got to the parking lot there were a crazy amount of cars. Part of the lot was closed off, but still probably four times or more cars than our normal beach. Once we found a parking spot, we walked up to the beach area and saw they had four lifeguards on duty and lots of people scattered about the marked swim area. We were heading our way to the one end of the guarded area, since it looked less crowded on the beach. Then we decided there seemed to be a lot of people in the water. On our trek towards that side we noticed a decent spot between two lifeguard chairs kind of mid beach. So we had people on all sides of us. Typically, we set up near the water’s edge when we can.

After getting our area settled, I moved on to the sandals and shirt removal. Then down with the shorts to show my sapphire Speedo Solar. I stood there a few minutes waiting for the kids to get their footwear off. When they were ready we headed to the water. There seemed to be a lot more kids at this beach though I don’t know if that is normal or just because of limited selection for swimming. In general though there was quite a range of people at this beach. Now there was a good age range of women in bikinis, which was nice. A couple women I’ll call retirees even wearing bikinis. Saw quite a few mothers wearing bikinis also. One mother of two kids older than mine was wearing a pretty skimpy cut bottom. Not sure what to call it a Rio or Brazilian cut. Seems to be no consistency on back cuts when I looked these two styles up. Anyhow it was probably a bit smaller than a half back, but with cheekiness to it. She was taking some selfies and also had a bystander take a picture of her with her kids. I think this beach trip beats out my one from last year for the busy beach I’ve worn my swim brief too. Again I spent pretty much the whole time in the water. I felt the one woman retiree sporting a bikini sitting at the water’s edge was keeping an eye on me, but it may have been my imagination with her wearing sunglasses. I did come out of the water to our spot for maybe 5 minutes while my daughter had a quick snack. I just stood there waiting. Sitting right behind our spot was a small group of women (retirees). I kind of wish I paid attention to them to see if there was an reactions, but thought that wouldn’t really be acting normal. So I just minded my business with the family. I spent a little more time with my daughter in the water before we headed back to our spot to gather things up. I stuck with just wearing the swim brief back to the car and the drive home ending another successful beach trip.

My favorite beach trip this year was probably the last one though I have some mixed feelings about this beach area. I did like it better than the busy one we visited last year. It was nice to have more women of varying ages in bikinis. I felt like it made me fit in a little better even though I was the lone guy in skimpy swimwear. It allowed me to represent swim briefs for guys to quite a wide audience range. I’d rather have more personal space, which our normal beach offers with it being a lot wider along with less parking spaces. This isn’t because of my swimwear choice, but because I like personal space in general. Then I found the water to be dirtier, with debris and also pieces of garbage like plastic pieces and bottle lids. Then there were smokers on the beach. That is fine if they choose to smoke, but they could do it away from people. We’ll probably continue going to our normal spot, but will keep this one in mind if needed.

This was by far the most time I spent in public wearing a swim brief. Of course I always want more time than I get. Wish I would have had more time trying to catch some sun though. My thighs really need some tanning. How did your against the norm swimwear season work out for you?

Just a hunch but I’m guessing the retiree probably was keeping an eye on you.

Honestly Nate, when I think back just a few short years to the struggles you had in stripping down to a speedo, to where you are now, it truly gladdens my heart. Even with the extra security of being with your wife and two kids, to be the only guy in a speedo on a crowded beach infested by dork shorts is some achievement. I know you’re too modest to agree, but I’m darn certain that some of the people who cast their eyes over your speedo clad bod were secretly more than impressed by what they saw.
The icing on the cake for me is the fact that you didn’t cover up on the way back to your car, and even wore your speedo on the drive home! I think it goes to show that the more you do it, the easier it becomes.
Just saw a 73 years old gentleman on Instagram looking incredible rocking the skimpiest bikinis at the beach, with younger guys wearing dork shorts in the background. I just hope everyone who follows this blog will not wait until that grand age to achieve their goal of wearing skimpy at their local beach.

It has been a long journey and the family is a crutch to get me to be successful each time. Unfortunately, I’m more anxious when I try to go by myself on an uncrowded beaches. Always something to keep working on. Well, hopefully there are some that enjoy a guy in a swim brief. My goal of sharing my experiences are in hopes it will inspire others to give it a try.

    Great to read.

You said you wore them home each time, not covered by shorts. I think you said somewhere previously that you live on an acreage property. If this is still the case, then I suppose not too much to worry about when you arrived home. If home had been in suburbia and small blocks then it might have been more of a challenge, especially if you were in an area where the cars are parked on the street (if that applies to US).

What happened when you got home

    • The Bottom Drawer says:

You are correct that we have some acreage. Not quite as much as pre married, but enough that neighbors are not real close. The neighbors across the street have a good view of our drive through a big picture window. They are likely the ones that would have seen me. Maybe cars passing by if they happened to be looking my way. So you are correct about not much to worry about when arriving home. I just unloaded stuff from the car and put them away when we got home, which requires a few trips to the car. Walking from the beach to the car felt like more of a challenge when most of my time has been spent in the water while there. Puts me in view of people that may have not noticed me stripping down to my swim brief or arrived later. Or people in the parking lot that are there to use the multipurpose trail. In general I need to be out of the water more in my swim brief to help build my confidence wearing it in view of others longer.

There are areas people park on the street in the US. Just not in the particular area we live. House decisions fits in with liking space at the beach. I like space between my neighbors plus I enjoy having the space to just enjoy in general.

    Breaking boundaries.

Hopefully those looks can equate to more speedos and smaller cut bikini’s.

Towards the end of summer I realized I had to get out there more. Fortunately, my wife loves to go to the beach too, and supports me wearing bikinis.
There are two beaches we go to that each have a bar area (one very busy, one much quieter).
I admit I went up an inch on the sides from your Speedos, wearing Swimoutlet Sporti and Clubswim briefs.
I start wearing a hawaiian shirt, which I can unbuttom/take off as the situation merits (and based on whether I’ve had a drink!).
Was happy to take it off and be out there in just the bikinis at both beaches, even close to the busy bar area. I definitely got a couple double-take looks, but as you say, travelling with a woman makes things so much easier. Best of all, I was able to pose while my wife took pictures of me, and once a bartender took pictures of us both. We look pretty good!

    • mrrigid says:

Oh, I should mention that, sitting at the quieter bar, our neighbors-from-down-the-block recognized us and introduced themselves. At the time, I had my just my brief on and shirt open. The wife, herself in a sexy one-piece, stood next to me for awhile as we talked beach and kids and etc. Awesome!

      • swimmer78 says:

That’s so cool that your neighbors had a friendly chat with you while you wore your briefs!

I also wear the Sporti and Clubswim (or iSwim now I think?) briefs to our beach spot. Those are really nice briefs for the price. On the last beach trip I wore the royal blue iSwim briefs. The Sporti “Splice” brief is a good beach option. The sides are somewhere between the wider “American” cut and the smaller Euro style. I have worn the navy/gold combo before on the beach and it felt great. I wear the Sporti Euro briefs for swim workouts and racing. I haven’t been brave enough to wear those out on the beach. It’s actually has less coverage than a Speedo Solar. I think that’s my next challenge.

I’m not sure people in general, when they see a guy wearing a speedo really discern the difference between different sizes and cuts. They probably see a guy wearing a square cut or anything less as just a “speedo”. It’s a lot bigger deal to the guy wearing them because you feel more exposed in a skimpier style.

        • mrrigid says:

You may be right about other people only seeing speedo vs not speedo. Even my wife, who is very supportive, just says ‘wear whatever – you look fine.’

For me, though, it does feel like very different degrees of exposure. My 5″ -Nike Shark Mod or Speedo Dive 5 – I call those my ‘formal swimwear’ – I can wear those anywhere.

My 3″ – like the Splice or the iSwim/Clubswim – I need to warm up to those but they’re so much fun.

My 1″ – the Solar and the Sporti Euro – I do prefer those for laps, an empty beach, or our trip to Hawaii!

Love those Sporti Euros – tiny, inexpensive and no seam in the front. And I’ve got the purple ones you can’t get anymore!

        • The Bottom Drawer says:

You’re probably right, they are most likely more surprised that a guy is wearing a swim brief among all the shorts then paying attention to the width of the sides. I would think if the back or front cut was skimpier they might notice that or really narrow sides.

      • The Bottom Drawer says:

Sounds like a positive experience and the swim brief didn’t keep them away from saying hi, so must not of bothered them as it shouldn’t.

    • The Bottom Drawer says:

Yes, a supportive wife with you does make things a lot easier. Wife photographer is an added bonus.

  6. Ian says:

The only distinction I’ve heard personally is “speedo” versus a “tiny speedo” which was how one friend described my 1″ suit. I feel like she wouldn’t have said that if it were a square cut. Could be wrong

    • Ian says:

Oops meant this as a reply to mrrigid

    • The Bottom Drawer says:

I think square cuts people would probably differentiate from a swim brief (Speedo). Thinking how your friend described the smaller suit is probably going to be the distinction over it being called a bikini.

      • Ian says:

I think you’re right. My mom called it a “bikini” when I was in high school (or “your orange suit”) but I never hear that term anymore IRL except for describing women’s swimsuits

  7. MT says:

Out of curiosity, does your wife join you in pushing the norms a bit?

    • The Bottom Drawer says:

No, my wife has always been pretty conservative with her swimwear with wearing tankini tops. Since having kids, she has become a bit more conservatives with swim skirts or shorts (not baggy ones, but not skin tight either) over a brief type.

  8. Richard says:

Last winter I bought a black TYR Sport Racer to wear at family beaches in Northern Michigan. One of the beaches I have be going to for over 60 years. Up through about 30 years ago I was comfortable wearing a Speedo at that beach. Had four occasions to wear the TYR this summer. At a state park with my wife, after getting out of the water, a drunk guy came up to talk to us. I was afraid in his state of intoxication he was going to make an issue of my brief, but he did not. Twice at the other beach I noticed women checking me out after I got out of the water. Once I was alone and a woman parked next to me started a conversation which last about 15 minutes. Her eyes often moved down to physique and/or brief. The other young woman was with a guy wearing very long dork shorts. She may have been wondering what her guy would look like in a brief.

    • The Bottom Drawer says:

Sounds like you had a successful swim brief summer too.

      • Richard says:

Agree. I was apprehensive before each outing, not wanting any confrontations or catcalls. What seemed to be approving glances from women made each subsequent beach visit easier.

  9. Dallin says:

Last year I wore a speedo to the lake with my wife and kids and my brother and his wife, one of my first times wearing a speedo with family members beside my wife and kids. While we were there a couple people set up nearby and one of girls was wearing an extremely cheeky bikini bottom. It was weird how that helped me feel more comfortable, like well if she can wear basically a thong then I should be done wearing a speedo haha

I want to do a write up of my speedo experiences so far, and share it with you. What the best way to do that?

    Thanks!

    • The Bottom Drawer says:

There is some sense of comfort for me too when I see women in something at least as small as my suit if not smaller. Maybe it is a reference to say look she is wearing something skimpy so why not me if ever confronted, which I have not as of yet.
