Sportswear Easier Than Swim Briefs

Sportswear Easier Than Swim Briefs

If you are a regular to my blog then you probably have read my journey getting into swim brief. You can read it here if you haven’t. It was a long journey for me to finally wear a swim brief in public. Then it took me a while after my first appearance to make it my regular wear at the local beaches.

Wearing a swim brief really isn’t the first time for me wearing something form fitting that put my lower half on display. I’ve been wearing bike shorts and tights for years. I also have tight fitting ski pants. I wear them cross cross-country skiing. So why are these easier to wear over a swim brief? They’re acceptable to wear for the sport. Well, maybe not exactly the ski tights, but the bike wear is. Swim briefs are acceptable for lap swimming or swimming activities that are considered sports. They’re supposedly not for recreational wear at the pool or beach.

As usual it comes down to what is perceived as a norm. It is normal to see form fitting clothing in certain sports and it doesn’t seem people even bat an eye at it. Or maybe we don’t think about it when we are doing that sport. It is what we wear for it and others are wearing it with you. It’s when you go against the grain of what is normal when we think more about it. A lot of the time you are the only one going against it at that moment.

I’ve worn my bike shorts or tights where many have seen me in them. I never thought much about it or had anxiety about it. I’ve eating at places in them, gone into convenience stores wearing them, and walked around in places where others weren’t wearing them. Of course my bike was with me, parked outside, or on the car. I guess it gives me the confidence to wear my form fitting attire.

I have more confidence now than when I started wearing swim briefs. I’m more anxious with new situations than when it is our routine beach trip. There is still a little at first even with what I’m use to, but when the shorts come off it typically melts away quickly. I now really dread when I get in a situation where I feel I have to resort to swim trunks (I know I shouldn’t).

There is nothing wrong with that. I now have gone a step further and are wearing designer string bikinis at the pool for men made in the States proper contour ones. And I’m middle aged and enjoying it.

Cycling, Speed skating, Wrestling and Athletics are just some of the sports where the wearing of skin tight clothing is deemed perfectly normal and in many cases essential in streamlining the body in pursuit of faster times. It has become so commonplace in some sports, that is seems odd to see for example a sprinter wearing anything other than lycra shorts.
Anyone who follows social media platforms like Instagram will see how tights, compression shorts and leggings feature regularly on video selfies taken in gyms, without any condemnation.
So why is it harder to wear a swim brief, which in some cases can be less revealing than tights? One possible explanation could be the amount of bare skin exposed when wearing a swim brief compared to tights etc. Although this tends to be an issue that affects men more than women, I’m reminded of the female long jumper who was subjected to some serious negativity from an Olympic official for wearing what she deemed to be an immodest bikini bottom.
Anyway guys, it seems the only way we can wear swim briefs without any fear of condemnation is to say we are members of a water polo team. Have you seen how skimpy their speedos are? lol. Image playing that sport wearing dork shorts!

I would agree I would find easier to wear my lycra running shorts then my newly bought speedo. I probably have more instances to wear the running shorts then the speedo. I think its more the norm, but still will get some looks on why are you wearing those for the everyday person.

I had a thought, many American sports players typically wear compression shorts/pants during practice. To me this has added to the “normal” wearing for non-athletes. What if football players instead of wearing compression shorts wore swim briefs. Would this help to make wearing swim briefs more natural?

I’m not aware of any UK footballers who wear swim briefs under their regular team shorts, but it is quite commonplace to see Australian rugby players wearing speedos/budgy smugglers under their shorts. I think the main reason for that is because they are tighter than regular underwear and therefore less likely to be pulled down when being tackled.

I guess I’m lucky, I’ve never had any problems wearing speedo’s / swim briefs to the beach or public pool. I was brought up in England in the 70’s and everyone wore some sort of speedo brief. I remember the first time I wore a pair that I bought, it was a very small Hom brief with very small sides. Even back then I was a little unsure about how people would react and was pleasantly surprised when my brother mentioned how much he liked them.

Since then I’ve only worn speedo’s, I live in Australia now and have maybe 10 pairs of quite small swim bikinis, mainly Cocksox. This year I bought a swim thong from Cocksox and was determined to wear it, I’ve put it off for so long. Last month I went hiking and only took my swim thong, so I would be forced to wear it. Wear it I did and it felt great, my wife didn’t even bat an eyelid, so I don’t know why I felt so self conscious. The plan is to wear it to a public beach soon, Autumn is here now and its getting cold, but it still might be a good time to start to wear it to the beach as there will be less people around.
My point is that we are all on a journey, just at different points along the road. Once I get used to wearing a thong on a crowded public beach I’ll be looking at a nude beach 🙂
